Principal photography is set to commence next month on the sequel to 2015’s summer smash hit Jurassic World. Just last month, the sequel’s director J.A. Bayona revealed he would not only be bringing his horror background to the table in an effort to take the series back to its roots with his but he would also be bringing back the practical effects and animatronics that made the original Jurassic Park such a magical experience, to begin with.
As the franchise continues to push forward, Bayona has now revealed he is looking back not only to the original film from Steven Spielberg for inspiration but the novel by Michael Crichton as well.
While promoting his new film A Monster Calls in an interview with Perri Nemiroff of Collider, the conversation naturally shifted to the topic of Jurassic World 2, telling Collider:
“It’s supposed to be more scary and more darker. Of course you have Chris Pratt so it’s going to be a lot of fun but I’m sure it’s going to be a little dark.”
When asked if he would be looking Crichton’s novel for inspiration Bayona revealed what elements from the novel he hopes to incorporate into his film:
“I just read the books again from Michael Crichton and I really like how he’s all the time grounded and how he talks about science and at the same time makes it real.”
The first Jurassic Park featured elements of horror with terrifying scenes such as Dennis Nedry’s (Wayne Knight) death via Dilophosaurus and the intense kitchen scene that Tim (Joseph Mazzello) and Lex (Ariana Richards) barely made it out of. The franchise has failed to capture that fear factor since the first film but it seems Jurassic World 2 could be a return to form for the dino-rampaging franchise.
Part of what made the original Jurassic Park such a magical experience was the way in which it combined the animatronics by Stan Winston and the computer graphics from ILM, tricking your eyes into believing what you were seeing was real. Jurassic World, unfortunately, only featured one single practical effect.
The sequel will see the return of Owen (Chris Pratt), Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard), and Dr. Henry Wu (BD Wong). In addition, the film will also introduce new characters played by Toby Jones (Captain America: The First Avenger), Rafe Spall (Life of Pi, Black Mirror), and Justice Smith (The Get Down).
Jurassic World 2 hits theaters June 22, 2018.
