‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2’ Will Crush Bechdel Test

James Gunn took to Facebook yesterday to express his frustration with the lack of three dimensional female characters in film and stories in general. He promises the upcoming sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy will feature both male and female characters that will be interwoven in a way which will strengthen and optimize one another.

James Gunn took to Facebook yesterday to express his frustration with the lack of three dimensional female characters in film and stories in general. He promises the upcoming sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy will feature both male and female characters that will  be interwoven in a way which will strengthen and optimize one another.

Women all over the world have been pushed to the sidelines in the interests of men, and their personhood is often forgotten or delegitimized. This is true in the realms of politics and education and religion. But it is also true in the realm of STORIES. That is my personal area of expertise, and that is where I believe women – and girls – deserve the fullness of character that men have often received (I almost said “always received” but then remembered much character writing sucks, regardless of sex).

Now I know, in these weird times, just for writing this, I will be accused of being an SJW or “having an agenda”. Who knows. You can categorize it however you want. But in truth I DO have an agenda, and that is telling FULL and TRUTHFUL stories, where ALL the characters are deeply realized. As a person I am a man; as a writer, I need to be everyone. Only in this way will our art and our entertainment adequately express life and inspire all of us.

I am sick of stories where there are a bunch of fully realized male characters and one female character, whose primary characteristic is simply being “the girl” or the personality-less object of some man’s affections. I’m not sick of this because I’m politically correct – those of you who know me know I am far from that – but because it’s boring, and it’s b.s. Likewise, I don’t think only making female characters “strong” is a fix either – you see her all the time these days, the perfect female warrior, who is a reaction to the stories of the past, but who is equally as boring and one-dimensional.

Great male characters, from Michael Corleone to Marty McFly to Han Solo to the Joker, are never perfect and never one-dimensional. They are sometimes heroic and sometimes villainous and often deeply flawed. But they always reflect the fullness of the world around us. I do not think that is true of the majority of female characters in films. I have done my best, as a male writer, with varying degrees of success, to bring female characters and female stories to the forefront.

I can’t wait for you all to see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, with Gamora, Nebula, and Mantis in action, where we not only pass the Bechdel test, but run over it and back up over it again and again in an eighteen-wheeler truck, and where their stories and the men’s stories don’t come at the expense of each other, but are interwoven in a way to strengthen and optimize all of them.

For those unfamiliar, the Bechdel test asks a work of fiction whether it: 1) has at least two female characters 2) who talk to each other 3) about something other than a man. The first film certainly passed the Bechdel test and the new film boasts at least four major female characters including Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Nebula (Karen Gillan), Mantis (Pom Klementieff) and Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki).

I’m most excited to see Zoe Saldana have a bigger part this time around. While she was great in the first film, I felt she was relegated to nothing more than a damsel in distress in this summer’s Star Trek Beyond. It really was a disservice to not just the actress but the character of Uhura as well.

Women still have a long way to go in entertainment but it’s important to celebrate the progress that has been made.I want to take this opportunity to recognize the incredible and iconic female characters we have been fortunate enough to receive in film and television this past year in the form of Rey (Daisy RidleyThe Force Awakens) and Eleven (Millie Bobby BrownStranger Things).

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters May 5, 2017.

Expect a slew of TV spots to drop over the course of the next few weeks as we ramp up to the film’s release.

Marvel’s Doctor Strange follows the story of the talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilizing a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel cinematic universe.

‘Captain Marvel’: Origin Story Confirmed

Coming as no great surprise, President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige has confirmed Marvel’s first female lead superhero film, Captain Marvel will be an origin story for the character. It was announced this past comic con that the film will star Academy Award-winning actress Brie Larson in the title role.

Other than that not much else is known about the film at this point, however. Last night Marvel held an exclusive fifteen minute preview for the upcoming Doctor Strange showing off footage from the film in IMAX. Afterwards, Feige confirmed a key piece of information regarding Captain Marvel while discussing the differences between the origins of The Avengers and the magical defenders of Earth.

I think Benedict [Cumberbatch] is one of those ways. Benedict is an amazing actor and totally different than Hemsworth and totally different from Downey. And, we want to stay true to who he was in the books. The metamorphosis of what he goes through is more drastic than Tony [Stark] and that was fun to chart. I guess Black Panther isn’t really an origin story since we saw him already in Civil War, but his stand alone certainly introduces you to 99% of his world which you never saw before. And Captain Marvel is certainly an origin story from the start.

Considering there are no rumors of her making a debut in any Avengers movies previous to the film’s release, we all assumed her first film would be an origin story anyway. In the comics, Carol Danvers A.K.A. ‘Captain Marvel’ was a test pilot who gained super strength and the ability to fly after being caught in an explosion with a Kree device.

Captain Marvel hits theaters March 8, 2019.

Doctor Strange Featurette Plus New Chinese Banner

The featurette focuses on how Marvel has adapted the incredible artwork for Doctor Strange by Steve Ditko for an immersive IMAX experience in the cinema.

The Marvel universe is about to get mystical as Doctor Strange  will introduce the mystical arts as well as alternate realities into the MCU. While magic has already been introduced to us in the form of Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), this film is going to be some serious next level stuff.

The featurette focuses on how Marvel has adapted the incredible artwork for Doctor Strange by Steve Ditko for an immersive IMAX experience in the cinema.

Dr. Stephen Strange was severely injured in an auto accident permanently damaging  the nerves in his hands. He was able to heal but not well enough to ever perform surgery again. After traveling the world in search of a healer, he discovered The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) in Tibet to which he offered himself as a disciple—becoming earth’s next magical defender.

The film’s director Scott Derrickson also tweeted a picture today of a new banner on display in China.

Doctor Stranger hits theaters November 4, 2016.

Evangeline Lilly Confirms Avengers 4 Role; Talks Ant-Man and The Wasp

The script for Ant-Man and The Wasp, the sequel to last summers hit Ant-Man is currently in development at Marvel although it has not yet been approved by the studio.

The script for Ant-Man and The Wasp, the sequel to last summers hit Ant-Man is currently in development at Marvel although it has not yet been approved by the studio. In an interview with Blastr over the weekend, Lilly talked about how the film is going to be an origin story for her character as Janet Van Dyne becomes ‘The Wasp’ which was teased in the post credits scene of Ant-Man.

Lilly then confirmed that her character will indeed appear in the second part of Avengers: Infinity War. Although Marvel has confirmed that the second part of Infinity War will be branded with a different title, it is most definitely a sequel to Infinity War or at least a direct result of the events that will take place in the film. Ant-Man and The Wasp is slated to drop in between the next two Avengers films so it makes sense that they would wait for her to appear in the second part of Infinity War.

Check out the interview below and let me know what you think about Lilly appearing alongside The Avengers.

Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters May 4, 2018  followed by Ant-Man and The Wasp on July 6, 2018 and then the Untitled Infinity War sequel on  May 3, 2019.
