After both Warcraft and Assassins Creed failed to live up to expectations of both fans and studio executives alike, we’re going to have to wait until 2018 for film adaptations of video games to have another chance at legitimizing themselves.

Thanks to a report per My Entertainment World (h/t Screenrant), we now know Roar Uthaugh (The Wave) is set to commence principal photography on the reboot for Tomb Raider next month starring academy award winner Alicia Vikander with filming taking place in the UK and South Africa.

The feature film reboot of the video game is set to be an origin story for Lara Croft that will draw influence from the 2013 reboot of the video game. Lara will set out on a quest to find her father that will force her to discover the courage within, becoming the heroic archaeologist we know as the Tomb Raider. Walton Goggins (Justified, Son of Anarchy) is also attached to star as the film’s antagonist.

Tomb Raider is currently slated to hit theaters March 16, 2018.

The Tomb Raider reboot is beginning to shape up. The film starring oscar winner Alicia Vikander may have found its villain. Variety reports Walton Goggins is in final negotiations to join the film. Goggins is best known for his roles on Justified and Sons of Anarchy.

The reboot currently in development at MGM and GK Films is to be directed by Roar Uthaugh (The Wave). The film seems to be following a similar path as the 2013 reboot of the video game which followed the young recent archaeological graduate Lara Croft after she was shipwrecked on the fictional island of Yamatai off the coast of Japan. Yamatai itself was home to the Sun Queen who was rumored to possess shamanistic powers. In order to survive, Lara had to discover the strength within herself, forging her into the hero we know as the Tomb Raider.

If the film is indeed drawing influence from the 2013 game, it’s possible Goggins could be playing the character of James Whitman. Whitman is a television producer who was also the lead archaeologist on the expedition to Yamatai. In the game, Whitman turned antagonist after he allowed himself to be captured along with Lara by the inhabitants of Yamatai. Ultimately Whitman lost himself in his fascination of the islanders and the Sun Queen.

If not Whitman, Goggins could be playing Father Mathias, a plane crash survivor who now leads a cult known as the Solarii Brotherhood that worships the Sun Queen

Tomb Raider is currently slated to hit theaters March 16, 2018.

‘Tomb Raider’ Reboot To Be An Origin Story

In 2013, Square Enix rebooted the Tomb Raider franchise. The game follows the young recent archaeological graduate Lara Croft after she was shipwrecked on the fictional island of Yamatai off the coast of Japan. Yamatai itself was home to the Sun Queen who was rumored to possess shamanistic powers. The game flowed like a film following Lara as she had to fight against a criminal cult who worshiped the Sun Queen in order for her and her friends to survive. It was an incredible adventure that was able to force Lara to discover the courage within. Players experienced Lara as she had no choice but to forge herself into the heroic archaeologist we know as the Tomb Raider. At the end — after experiencing the supernatural herself — Lara was filled with regret having doubted the mythical stories her now deceased father once told her as a child.

A feature film reboot of the franchise is currently in development at Warner Bros. with Roar Uthaugh (The Wave) attached to direct and oscar winner Alicia Vikander set to star. While promoting the upcoming film Allied, producer Graham King — who is also producing the Tomb Raider feature — revealed to Hey U Guys that the plot of new reboot, like the 2013 game, will be an origin story.

“Well this is kind of what we call a ‘back to the roots story’. This is a young Lara Croft in search to see if her father is dead or alive, so it has a very emotional part to it and i think that’s what Alicia found so interesting about it. I think the storytelling is really good and i think we’ve got the right crew and a great director and I think it’s going to be really fun making a film like this”.

While the film doesn’t sound like a straight adaptation of the game, an origin story for Lara presents an opportunity for a powerful and compelling adventure that could make for a smash hit with Vikander starring as Croft.

Tomb Raider is slated to hit theaters March 16, 2018.
