‘Alien: Covenant’ Red Band Trailer

screen-shot-2016-11-30-at-3-29-40-pm

Yesterday on Christmas Day, 20th Century Fox dropped the first trailer for the upcoming sequel to Prometheus and prequel to the original Alien. The film looks good but the trailer feels a little too familiar. Like the Assassin’s Creed trailers, this trailer also suffers from poorly chosen, out of place music that takes away from what could have been a terrifying trailer.

Katherine Waterson Takes the Lead in a New Photo From ‘Alien: Covenant’

screen-shot-2016-11-30-at-3-29-40-pm

The marketing campaign for Alien: Covenant is pushing forward steadily, doling out tantalizing images the remind us the film will be closer in tone to the original Alien than other entries to the franchise such as Aliens or Prometheus. But the new film has to separate itself and stand out from the original Alien and Katherine Waterson who plays the character of Daniels told Empire just how Daniels differs from Ripley:

“Unlike Sigourney in Alien, [Daniels] is in a survival mode of sorts from the beginning. She’s not the captain, but she’s a natural leader so in times of crisis she falls into that position quite easily.”

Personally, Waterson looks a little too much like Ripley for my taste. So far the images released from the film have given me a lot of hope that Alien: Covenant is taking things back to the bloody horror roots of the original but I am beginning to worry this could be a bit of a retread. If it was a sequel it wouldn’t bother me so much but considering this is before Alien in the timeline, I’m worried Daniels’ character could take away from how special Ripley is if both characters are too similar.

Today is the 79th birthday of legendary director Ridley Scott. To celebrate, 20th Century Fox has released a new set photo featuring Scott directing a scene in what looks to be the interior of the spacecraft that crashed on LV-426, first seen in the original Alien. Behind Scott, the pilot’s chair can be seen, however. The pilot himself is mysteriously absent.

The Directors Guild of America announced that Scott has been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for Distinguished Achievement in Motion Picture Direction. DGA President Paris Barclay released a statement:

“Masterful in any genre, Ridley’s groundbreaking methods and peerless directing instincts have brought to life some of the most memorable films of our time, capturing the resilience of the human spirit and captivating the hearts and minds of audiences around the world. Stunning visuals, immersive worlds and powerful performances underpin his diverse body of work which ranges from Alien, Blade Runner and Thelma & Louise to Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, and, most recently, The Martian. Over the course of four decades, his trailblazing career has demonstrated the impact and importance of the director’s singular vision. For these reasons, and so many more, we are honored to present the Lifetime Achievement Award in feature film to Ridley Scott.”

‘Alien: Covenant’ Might Have A Name for Xenomorphs

While promoting his new film, The Light Between Oceans, Michael Fassbender slipped up in an interview with Mark Goodier on BBC Radio 2, referring to the Xenomorphs in the upcoming ‘Alien: Covenant’ as “Neomorphs”.

While promoting his new film, The Light Between Oceans, Michael Fassbender slipped up in an interview with Mark Goodier on BBC Radio 2, referring to the Xenomorphs in the upcoming Alien: Covenant as “Neomorphs”. AVP Galaxy claims that the name was used by the crew to identify the new alien variation and that these new Neomorphs are a result of the ecosystem being mutated by the black goo seen in Prometheus.

As time passed the black goo grew pods on the trees and the ground, releasing spores when disturbed. Apparently, these spores are set to infect several members of the crew through their nostrils and mouth. While it sounds like facehuggers will be absent from the film, it definitely still sounds like an Alien film as the new Neomorph will burst not from the chest, but from the back and throat.

The film directed by Ridley Scott will serve as a sequel to Prometheus as well as a prequel to the original Alien. Fassbender is the only cast member from Prometheus to return. The film also stars Amy Seimetz, Billy Crudup, Carmen Ejogo, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir, and Katherine Waterston.

Alien: Covenant hits theaters August 4, 2017.
