eSports began with the popular PC game Starcraft and players from South Korea who dominated the game online with their fierce ability to use the games hot-keys fast and furiously. Over the last few years, eSports have seen a significant rise in interest and popularity especially thanks to League of Legends, a PC game where players compete against each other with mages, fighters, and assassins inside an online battle arena. The game has spawned various annual tournaments that are streamed live on the web via twitch.tv. eSports as a whole continues to see bigger and bigger turnouts with higher ratings and more teams every season. As of June 2016, League of Legends has had $29,203,916 USD in prize money, 4,083 Players, and 1,718 tournaments

It was only a matter of time before Hollywood jumped on the bandwagon with a film about competitive gaming tournaments. Variety reports Will Ferrell is attached to star in a comedy that takes place in the world of eSports for Legendary Entertainment.
