Screen Shot 2017-01-05 at 6.56.16 PM.png

Marvel has released the first official behind the scenes look at the upcoming third outing for the Asgardian hero titled Thor: Ragnarok. The photo features Chris Hemsworth being directed by Taika Waititi. The film has been rumored to be a sort of buddy cop road movie in space featuring Thor and Hulk but thanks to the release of the film’s official synopsis, it seems the two will instead be pitted against each other.

“In Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok, Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok — the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization — at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger — the Incredible Hulk!”

The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, Anthony Hopkins, Cate Blanchett, Tessa Thompson, Jeff Goldblum, Karl Urban and Mark Ruffalo. Written by Stephen Folsom, Craig Kyle, Eric Pearson, and Christopher Yost. Directed by Taika Waititi.

Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters November 3, 2017.

Episode VIII to Explore Kylo Ren’s Humanity

Screen Shot 2017-01-05 at 7.31.25 PM.png

At this point, the only things known about the next chapter of the Skywalker Saga, the untitled Episode VIII, is that the film will break Star Wars tradition and rather than taking place months or years later, the film will pick up immediately where The Force Awakens left off with Rey’s plea-turned-demand for Luke to return to the galaxy with her in an effort to restore balance to the force. That and the film will include a larger role for Carrie Fisher than she had in Episode VII.

A trailer isn’t due to drop until the spring but Adam Driver has given fans a small tidbit to chew on until then. While speaking with Larry King, Driver told King fans can look forward to seeing Kylo Ren’s humanity explored in Episode VIII, or what little he has left of it:

“I think, I mean this is such a general answer, but you know, humanity. Even though it’s very much a blockbuster movie, and I’m aware of that, there was no taking that for granted in that we were forced to be general. You know, there were a lot of plot points that we knew were operating in the first one that we get to explain more in the second one that kind of make the both of them make sense. They do kind of feel kind of socially active to me. In that they’re – this is a long answer, but George Lucas originally – you know a lot of Star Wars was in response to Vietnam and I think a lot of what the, I remember talking to JJ and Ryan with this idea of terrorism and two sides kind of being morally justified to behave however they wanted to to get what they thought was absolutely correct.”

Back when Star Wars was created, the world was much simpler. Things were much more black and white than the rather gray world we live in today. As we just saw with Rogue One, Lucasfilm is doing their best to address that and have the films of this new Star Wars era represent the world as it is today. As far as Kylo Ren’s humanity goes, I don’t think he has much of it left. Some fans have speculated we’ll eventually see him redeem himself in the final chapter of the new trilogy, however. I don’t think that is possible and it’s not because he killed his father. It’s what killing his father meant. The test Kylo was facing was when he killed his father essentially the same test Vader faced in his final confrontation with Luke. It was a test to extinguish the light within himself and commit himself to the dark side for good. I don’t think there is any coming back from the dark side for Kylo.

screen-shot-2016-11-05-at-11-56-40-pm

The marketing campaign for Beauty and the Beast is starting to ramp up to the films the release and the more we see from the film, the more everything in this live-action remake looks perfect. Well, everything except for the Beast’s face. Hopefully, the animation in the finished film will be better because right now it just looks downright weird and cartoonish.

The latest tv spot focuses on the Beast’s charm and what he must do to woo Belle into falling in love with him in order to break the spell.

Beauty and the Beast hits theaters March 17, 2017.

The film stars Emma Watson as Belle, Dan Stevens as the Beast, Luke Evans as Gaston, Josh Gad as Le Fou, Ewan McGregor as Lumière, Sir Ian McKellen as Cogsworth, Kevin Kline as Belle’s father Maurice, Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Plumette, with a script penned by Evan Spiliotopoulos and Stephen Chbosky, directed by Bill Condor.

In this live-action re-imagining of the fairy tale, a young woman (Emma Watson) takes her father’s place as prisoner in a beast’s castle, only to fall in love with her beastly captor (Dan Stevens), who turns out to be a prince.

Woody Harrelson in Talks to Join Young Han Solo Story

Some exciting news regarding the Young Han Solo standalone feature which will begin filming next month at Pinewood studios has hit the web. THR reports Woody Harrelson is in talks with Lucasfilm to join the project. The rumor floating around is that Harrelson will play a character that serves as a mentor to the young Solo played by Alden Ehrenreich.

Harrelson would be an incredible addition to what Kathleen Kennedy has described as a western with a color palette influenced by the paintings of Frederic Remington. Ehrenreich stars alongside Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian and Emilia Clarke in a role that is currently unknown.

The film will be directed by The Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller with a script penned by Lawrence Kasdan and son Jon Kasdan. With cinematographer Bradford Young on board, the film has the potential to have a bold look and feel that could strike a perfect balance between humor and drama.

The Untitled Han Solo Story is slated to hit theaters May 25, 2018, however, it’s possible the film could be shifted to Holiday 2018. MakingStarWars.net claims to have a source in the theater industry that has received a release date for a Star Wars for December 13, 2018. While May was the home of Star Wars for many decades, Star Wars has become part of the holiday season in the new era and my hope is that it will continue. As a long time Star Wars fan, the return of the franchise has made my Christmas celebration even more special with my family these last two years.

‘Rogue One’ Editors Reveal Which Scenes Were From The Reshoots

(SPOILERS FOR ROGUE ONE AHEAD)

screen-shot-2016-12-09-at-12-22-50-pm

Since the spring of last year, reports of extensive reshoots for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story loomed heavily over the production after Disney Executives were seemingly unsatisfied with the initial cut of the film delivered by Gareth Edwards. As a fan, I didn’t care exactly what was going to be reshot as long as you couldn’t tell and even though the reworking of the third act became apparent upon viewing the film as much of the action from the trailer was unfolding differently, I think we can all agree Lucasfilm made the right decisions to give us what I think is a borderline masterpiece as far as the third act goes.

But it wasn’t just the third act that was reworked. Leading up to the film’s release it was revealed that the character of Bodhi played by Riz Ahmed was a big part of the reshoots as Lucasfilm wanted to offer a bit more screentime to flesh out the Imperial defector. While speaking with Yahoo! UK, editors John Gilroy and Colin Goudie were asked about the reshoots and Gilroy revealed just exactly which scenes were added into the mix to flesh out not just Bodhi, by Cassian Andor played by Diego Luna as well:

“The story was reconceptualised to some degree, there were scenes that were added at the beginning and fleshed out. We wanted to make more of the other characters, like Cassian’s character and Bodhi’s character.

The scene with Cassian’s introduction with the spy, Bodhi traipsing through Jedha on his way to see Saw, these are things that were added. Also Jyn [Jyn Erso, the reluctant leader of the film, played by Felicity Jones], how we set her up and her escape from the transporter, that was all done to set up the story better.”

Funny enough, the beginning is where I think the film had its biggest flaws. While Cassian’s introduction was fantastic and worked perfectly — totally hooking me into his character — Bodhi’s introduction, on the other hand, was rushed and squeezed in between Cassian and adult Jyn’s introductions. We go from the trading outpost with Cassian to Jedha with Bodhi for a scene that clocks in at about one minute before jumping to Jyn’s rescue from the Imperial labor camp on Wobani. It’s just too much too fast. That and the biggest problem I think Rogue One has, which is most apparent with Bodhi, is that there far too much telling and not enough showing. We are told that Bodhi defected and that it was Galen who compelled him to do so. We are told about Jyn’s criminal past in her briefing from Mon Mothma after seeing her escape from imprisonment rather than showing what lead her to being in that cell in the first place. The adding of Jyn’s escape was extremely necessary, though. Had they jumped from young Jyn to her briefing at the Rebel base on Yavin 4 would have been even more jarring than the lack of the crawl.

My dreams that we would get to see some of that added exposition were dashed when Goudie was asked by Yahoo about the initial cut and how the length of that cut changed compared to the theatrical release:

“It was not much longer than the finished film. I think the first assembly was not far off actual release length. Maybe 10 minutes longer? I genuinely can’t remember because that was nearly a year ago now. There’s no mythical four hour cut, it doesn’t exist.”

While I’m not a fan of Warner Bros. releasing extended cuts of the DCEU films on blu-ray, I would eat up all the Star Wars I could get. I think Rogue One would actually benefit greatly from an extended cut. The film didn’t have much time to spend with the characters who I now love and it would be great to get to spend just a little more time with each and every one of them. Especially Cassian, that dude is rad.
