Donnie Yen Came Up With The Idea For His Character To Be Blind in ‘Rogue One’

In an interview with Jetset Magazine, Yen reveals director Garreth Edwards allowed for him to flesh out his own character and that it was him who actually came up with the idea for his character to be blind.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is only a little more than a month away. The film follows a band of rebel spies as they steal the Death Star plans to the superweapon destroyed by Luke Skywalker in the original classic A New Hope. The cast for the film which features some of the most talented actors in Hollywood today is currently making the press rounds to promote what is the first ever Star Wars spin-off from the Skywalker saga.

Donnie Yen, the biggest Chinese actor out there today, plays Chirrut Imwe, a deeply spiritual and highly skilled warrior who believes in the power of the force. His official character description on Starwars.com describes him as a warrior monk who has trained himself rigorously through physical and mental discipline. While it is said he does not possess the force, his blind character can still manage to masterfully defeat his enemies in battle both with a staff and bowcaster seen in the trailers.

In an interview with Jetset Magazine, Yen reveals director Garreth Edwards allowed for him to flesh out his own character and that it was him who actually came up with the idea for Chirrut Imwe to be blind.

Yen:

It was my idea to make him blind!

It’s incredible that in a film as big as Star Wars, Edwards (and Lucasfilm) still allows for the actors to bring their own ideas and creativity to the table and serves to highlight just how much Lucasfilm is interested in bringing forth the best film possible. After learning about Yen’s contribution, I’m still left wondering exactly what I was before? Just how is Chirrut Imwe still able to participate in combat if he is blind?

Considering Jedi Knight Kanin Jarrus was blinded by Darth Maul last spring on Star Wars Rebels, leading the Jedi to learn how to use the force as a replacement for his sight, Rogue One is going to need to explain just exactly how what Chirrut Imwe did to regain some sort of sight if he is indeed not force-sensitive.

It seems the force isn’t exactly as cut and dry as it was explained by the Jedi Masters in the original trilogy. Star Wars Rebels also introduced us to the Bendu, a force sensitive creature who manages not to succumb to the dark side, but exist in a sweet spot just between that and the light. Could Yoda and Obi-Wan’s explanation of the force simply be their interpretation based on their understanding of it at that time?

The dark side is also a bit more complicated than most think as well. Yoda claimed that once you began down the path to the dark side, forever would it dominate your destiny, however. That clearly wasn’t the case for Darth Vader. The franchise also introduced fans of The Clone Wars series to Asajj Ventress and the Nightsisters who were a clan of Dark Jedi witches based on the planet of Dathomir. The Nightsisters tapped into the magical ichor which flowed from the depths of Dathomir and allowed them to harness the power of the dark side without the physical mutations that manifest once an individual commits themselves to the Sith. In other words, they were able to remain themselves.

Hopefully Rogue One will offer some clarification into just exactly what else is going on with the force. Or at the very least, how Chirrut Imwe has managed to conquer his blindness. Personally, I still have hope he is a force-sensitive individual.

‘xXx: Return of Xander Cage’ Official Trailer #1

The official trailer for xXx: Return of Xander Cage, the third outing in the franchise dropped earlier this week and it looks absolutely ridiculous. From skiing through the jungle, to riding a dirt bike over waves in the ocean, everything about this film is completely absurd and it’s going to be a hell of a lot of fun giggling all the way through it. The tagline for the film tells audiences — especially those not familiar with the franchise from over a decade ago — everything they need to know in order to not take this wild cheese fest seriously: “Kick some ass, get the girl, and try to look dope while you doing it”.

Lucasfilm just dropped a series of character posters from the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story via the official Star Wars twitter account.

The posters feature our heroic rebel spies as well as the film’s main villain, Director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn). Each poster also gives us a very short bio for each of the characters. Check it out below!

‘Rogue One’: Final Trailer Breakdown

The biggest moments from the incredible final trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

This morning we were delighted to the final U.S. trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The new trailer gave us more insight to the story than previous trailers and confirms the rumor that Jyn Ero’s father, Galen is the scientist who invented the original Death Star — which was alluded to by Mads Mikkelsen at the panel during this past Star Wars Celebration.

Here is a break down of the trailers most remarkable moments.

rogue-one-star-wars-2

The trailer opens with some gorgeous cinematography that screams Saving Private Ryan. Director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) arrives on an unknown planet via a delta class shuttle to collect the scientist Erso against his will. Krennic is flanked by his squad of Deathtroopers and he’s not taking no for an answer. Considering Jyn’s mother is nowhere to be seen but is rumored to appear in the film, my guess is that she does not make it off the planet alive and that Galen is forced to do whatever he has to in order to protect the only family he has left.

Rogue-One-Star-Wars-10.jpg

Next we get see Jyn being broken out of Imperial jail by the rebel alliance. Things are starting to make a lot more sense now that we understand the familial connection she has to the Death Star. It’s smart for the rebellion to exploit this and it doesn’t hurt that Jyn is already a bit of a rebel herself.

rogue-one-star-wars-13

Giant Jedi statue people. It has been said that the planet Jedha will serve as the Mecca for the Star Wars Universe. Nothing could symbolize the fall of the Jedi Order in the galaxy better than this.

rogue-one-star-wars-14

Jyn is escorted by the rebels to the base on Yavin IV where she is briefed on the current crisis. Through Star Wars Rebels and the new canon novels, Lucasfilm has been shaping things up so that the Empire was on the verge of annihilating the rebellion before it could pose a real threat. It would add a lot more weight to Luke Skywalker destroying the technological terror in A New Hope if the Rebel Alliance really is on the brink of complete destruction just before Jyn steals the plans to the Death Star.

rogue-one-star-wars-15

Not much is known about the planet we see next other than the fact it will serve as the location for a major action set piece in the film. In previous trailers, rebel soldiers can be seen making a ground assault with X-Wings providing air support. This unknown facility seems like it could be Galen’s base of operations.

rogue-one-star-wars-18

The Death Star looms over what is most likely the tropical planet Scariff where the super weapon was constructed.

Rogue-One-Star-Wars-22.jpg

Next we’re treated to the moment the rebel spies are given their callsign. It’s a little cheesy but I love it anyway. We also get to see the shot from the celebration reel from inside the U-Wing cockpit just as it enters into hyperspace. Rather than using a green screen and CGI for this, director Garreth Edwards opted for a composite screen to give the actors something tangible to interact with.

rogue-one-star-wars-23

“The power that we are dealing with here is immeasurable,” Krennic says to Darth Vader. No doubt the scenes featuring Vader are the most anticipated moments of this film. From what we see Krennic does not fear Vader. He better check his tone before he gets force choked.

Rogue-One-Star-Wars-50 (1).jpg

There is a lot of speculation going around the internet that this is Tarkin. It’s definitely possible. My theory is that Tarkin will make an appearance in the film, however. This shot is most likely a red herring.

Rogue-One-Star-Wars-26.jpg

My personal favorite moment from the trailer. While I love the new U-Wing, as well as the new tie strikers and AT-ACT’s, I can’t wait to see things from the original trilogy. Seeing this chicken walker as it lays waste to a city street was like reuniting with an old friend.

Rogue-One-Star-Wars-28.jpg

It’s a bit poetic that Saw Gerrara is now part man, part machine and in need of a life support system to keep him alive just like the man who trained him — Anakin Skywalker. My hope is that we get to see Gerrara come face to face with Vader, however. For their connection to resonate with general audiences, they need to take the time to explain his past connection with Vader within Rogue itself. Otherwise they run the risk of alienating a lot of people.

Rogue-One-Star-Wars-29.jpg

Rebellions are built on hope. Donnie Yen’s Chirrut Imwe is all smiles in this trailer and I love it. The Jedi worshiper can feel the force is with them as they embark on their mission to steal the Death Star plans.

Rogue-One-Star-Wars-30.jpg

I find this shot particularly interesting. This is no doubt the manufacturing facility on Scariff where the Death Star was constructed. But it has me wondering whether this trench or tunnel seen in the photo is the same tunnel we see in the other trailer where Jyn, Cassian and K-2SO are being chased by stormtroopers on the train platform. My first thought was that it was the train that runs across the Death Star itself (described in Lost Stars) but this shot has me thinking otherwise. The bunker at the bottom is also where the rebels will come out of just before they charge towards the AT-ACT’s.

Rogue-One-Star-Wars-31.jpg

Cough, cough Platoon

Rogue-One-Star-Wars-32.jpg

Jyn, Cassian and K-2SO infiltrate the Imperial manufacturing facility on Scariff. We’ll have to wait until the third act to see Felicity Jones in her badass undercover gear but what has me pumped is that this is just before they throw down and go fist for fist with some stormtroopers as they steal the plans for the Death Star. With K-2SO at their side, chances are we will get to see him kick some ass as well. He certainly looks like he could hold his own.

Rogue-One-Star-Wars-38.jpg

Chirrut — the blind force worshiper — tears it up with some sort of Bowcaster in this glimpse from the films climactic action sequence. As we just learned on Star Wars Rebels, someone who can harness the force does not need their sight to be able to see. While it has been said there will be no Jedi in the film, this seems to tell us that Chirrut is a force user.

Rogue-One-Star-Wars-41.jpg

Space battles! This was no doubt the moment Star Wars fans cheered during the trailer. While I loved The Force Awakens to pieces, the lack of space battles was a bummer for me. Not only are we going to get a space battle, we’re going to get a space battle that features the original X-Wings from the classic trilogy. The facility they are attacking is most likely in space just over Scariff. Chances are this facility was used to assemble the Death Star.

Rogue-One-Star-Wars-44.jpg

Could this be Jedha being destroyed by the Death Star? It certainly seems like it and with the fall of the Jedi in the galaxy it would make sense, however. The destruction of Aldeeran was the dividing point in the galaxy. Causing many within the Empire to defect to the Rebellion even if they didn’t agree with the rebels — they knew the Empire had to be stopped by any means necessary. The destruction of Jedha has never been mentioned before so if it was destroyed by the Death Star, it isn’t something widely known in the galaxy.

Rogue-One-Star-Wars-46.jpg

Vader is on a mission. If I saw the Sith Lord walking towards me like that I would kiss my ass goodbye.

rogue-one-star-wars-47

Given the rain, it’s possible this is from the same scene on the mysterious planet where Krennic confronts Galen. My best guess is that it’s actually from the scene pictured just above where Vader is stepping towards Krennic. Chances are Krennic isn’t getting the job done and Vader has come to handle things himself.

rogue-one-at-acts.jpg

The rebels can be seen making their last ditch effort to escape Scariff with the Death Star plans during the films climactic action sequence.

Rogue-One-Star-Wars-49.jpg

Up close and personal. Baze and Chirrut make their escape nearly getting crushed by the foot of an AT-ACT. This moment gave me some serious Jurassic Park vibes. It also shows Edwards’ strength as a director as he hones in on the characters with the background of something epic and fantastical.

While this is said to be the final official trailer for the film I would expect an international trailer (or two) to drop before we start getting bombarded with TV spots ramping up to the film’s release.

‘Rogue One’: Poster Revealed; Official Trailer Tomorrow

The new poster features the entire cast set against the backdrop of the original Death Star.

The new official U.S. poster for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has been revealed! Over the last few weeks we saw both a Japanese and Korean poster which didn’t look too great, however. This new poster is fantastic and features the entire cast set against the backdrop of the original Death Star. The helmet of Darth Vader can also be seen in the upper right corner representing the looming presence he will have over the film.

14681903_1284802921571306_5680402680203890913_o.jpg

The poster was revealed today on The Star Wars Show by the film’s Director Garreth Edwards. But that wasn’t all, Edwards took this opportunity to announce that the final trailer for the film will be released tomorrow morning.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters December 16, 2016.

‘Rogue One’ Celebration Reel Impressions

Hold on to your butts. In just three months we’ll be fully engrossed in another Star Wars Christmas season being yet again introduced to a slew of new characters, ships and planets never before seen in the ever expanding Star Wars galaxy.

Hold on to your butts. In just three months we’ll be fully engrossed in another Star Wars Christmas season being yet again introduced to a slew of new characters, ships and planets never before seen in the ever expanding Star Wars galaxy. Only time will tell whether or not Garreth Edwards was the right choice to helm the first of many Star Wars spinoffs but as it stands Edwards looks to have crafted what could be the most immersive experience yet in the film franchise. Even the biggest skeptics, including myself, who were left bored by Edwards’ other films are scratching their heads wondering how the hell this film could be boring after that action-packed sizzle reel.

The reel opens showcasing a battle scene that is no doubt the Star Wars version of Omaha beach. The film looks to have pulled many visual influences from war films such as Saving Private Ryan, Apocalypse Now, and Platoon. Yet the film still feels unquestionably Star Wars. This has many of us wondering what other kinds of genres could be blended into the Star Wars universe going forward. The possibilities really are endless.

rogue-one-celebration-reel

As with any Lucasfilm production, you would expect there to be some incredible filmmaking behind this project and Rogue One looks to be no different. In much of the reel Garreth Edwards can be seen being a boss behind the lens during sequences featuring practical effects. In some shots, rather than using green screen, Edwards has chosen to use projection screens giving the actors something to look at as well as act off of. This will surely help to avoid the wooden performances captured in the blue screen vacuums the prequels were filmed inside of.

star-wars-rogue-one-trailer-breakdown-10
Ben Mendelsohn as Director Orson Krennic. (Lucasfilm)

What might be most exciting is how many new things we will see for the first time in the Star Wars universe. In the Skywalker Saga things are usually black and white. However, some of the new canon novels have delved into grey area of the galaxy. As we learned in Lost Stars, there are good people in the empire. Good people who end up on the wrong side. Rogue one will explore the grey area. Fans of the Clone Wars are familiar with the character of Saw Gerrara but in December, Forrest Whittaker will introduce a wider audience to a rebel freedom fighter whose tactics are considered too extreme for the rebellion.

We will also be treated to the first hand to hand combat action scene in the franchise. In past Star Wars films we have experienced the most jaw dropping and breathtaking action sequences in history. From the trench run to the lightsaber duel on Mustafar, the action has always been epic. Maybe that’s what makes the action in Rogue One look so refreshing. Sure, punches have been thrown throughout lightsaber duels in the past but never has anyone just ripped off their gloves and gone fist for first.

While Godzilla and Monsters weren’t very good, one impressive quality about both films is how Edwards managed to hone in and focus on the characters against the backdrop of something large and fantastical. Judging from the teaser trailer and the celebration reel, it certainly seems Edwards has managed to do that again. Maybe that’s why he was Kathleen Kennedy’s choice to helm the first spinoff of the franchise.
