Alan Tudyk Talks K-2SO on ‘The Star Wars Show’

Alan Tudyk sat down with Andi Gutierezz for this week’s episode of The Star Wars show and revealed some interesting insight into how his appearance helps to symbolize the droids personality.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set to introduce a slew of new characters and starfighters into the Star Wars galaxy including the first ever Imperial droid that is an actual character in the story. K-2SO (Kay-Tuesso) is an Imperial security droid who was reprogrammed to assist the Rebel Alliance played by Alan Tudyk. From what we have seen in the trailers and Star Wars celebration, the droid is a good hearted sarcastic droid that provides the comic relief in what has been called a dark war film.

Tudyk sat down with Andi Gutierezz for this week’s episode of The Star Wars show and revealed some interesting insight into how his appearance helps to symbolize the droids personality.

Kaytu, he has personality in his movement and it always worked better and it tranferred better if there was a little bit of a slouch. There’s one point in the movie where Kay-Tu walks down a hallway and is passed by another Kay-Tu model. He’s like a soldier and he’s walking very perfectly and very straight and upright. And then Kaytu is kind of, sort of loping along a little bit. I thin that’s what makes Kaytu a little bit more accessible and gosh I’m going to say it, lovable.

Tudyk is on the money. His comments show the deep thought that went into crafting the character with collaborative director Garreth Edwards. Based on Kay-Tuesso’s appearance, the droid certainly looks like he could hold his own in a fight. Standing upright, the tall droid would be an intimidating presence on-screen which would prevent him from connecting with the audience as the comic relief. To hear more about Tudyk’s experience providing the motion capture for Kay-Tu including what it was like to run on sand in a pair of stilts, check out the episode of The Star Wars Show below.
