‘Power Rangers’ Officially Rated PG-13

screen-shot-2016-11-30-at-2-12-50-pm

The upcoming feature film reboot of the Fox Kids series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is a major departure from the original series. It is essentially a total reimagining featuring a much darker and more mature take as opposed to the colorful and campy children’s series.

Power Rangers Now has reported that the film has officially received a PG-13 rating. As we have seen the in the trailer, the film with real teenage issues such as bullying as the characters struggle to find their place in the world.

After an incredible teaser trailer that got the world’s attention, myself and many fans have begun to temper their excitement having yet to see a full trailer that features the Rangers in their full suits and in action with their Zords with only two months left to go until the film’s release. But chances Lionsgate is saving the premiere of the official trailer until the Superbowl when they’ll have the chance to capture the world’s attention once more.

Power Rangers hits theaters on March 24, 2017.

The film stars Dacre Montgomery as Jason Lee Scott (Red Ranger), RJ Cyler as Billy Cranston (Blue Ranger), Naomi Scott as Kimberly Hart (Pink Ranger), Becky G as Trini Kwan (Yellow Ranger), Ludi Lin as Zack Taylor (Black Ranger), Bill Hader as Alpha 5, Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa, and Bryan Cranston as Zordon.

Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.

First Look at Bryan Cranston as Zordon in ‘Power Rangers’

screen-shot-2016-11-30-at-2-12-50-pm

The upcoming film reboot for Power Rangers which features an alien like redesign for all of the characters in a darker, more mature take on the franchise has so far offered us looks at the new suits, Zords, and villains in almost every single way but in the film except for Rita Repulsa. We’ve gotten posters featuring the new suits and Zords, images of the new toys revealing Goldar and the new Putties, but until now we have yet to see the new look for Zordon who is played by Bryan Cranston.

The new design for Zordon has come through a rather potato quality photo of a phone demoing the new virtual reality experience from Lionsgate for the film which will make its debut tomorrow at CES in Las Vegas. While most of the designs have been major departures from the original series, the new look for Zordon is much more familiar and for the most part just looks like Bryan Cranston with a blue face.

As I’ve said before, I am beginning to lose confidence in the film. After getting the world’s attention with a fantastic teaser trailer, Lionsgate has revealed nothing else from the film except for a rather cloudy poster of the new Zords. The studio needs to get moving on the marketing campaign because at this point I would venture to say the average moviegoer has no idea this film is even coming out.

‘Power Rangers’: First Look at Goldar

screen-shot-2016-11-30-at-2-12-50-pm

Like the Zords and Megazords, the first look at the redesigned Goldar from the upcoming reboot of Power Rangers comes to us via the official toy to be released by Bandai.

The new design for Goldar falls right in line with the alien aesthetics of the new Ranger suits and Zord designs from the upcoming film. Rather than being a beast like animal with Gold armor, the new Goldar is a completely gold alien monster and let’s just be honest, as far as a toy goes, he looks horrible. I’ll wait to reserve judgment until I saw him in action in the film, but the toy itself looks like someone literally dipped him in a gold.

‘Power Rangers’ Plot Details Emerge: Rita Repulsa is a Former Green Ranger Gone Rogue

Screen Shot 2016-12-10 at 1.09.47 PM.png

New details on the plot of the upcoming reboot of Power Rangers have emerged. The film itself is a darker, more mature reimagining the colorful campy children’s series from the nineties. Along with a total redesign of the Rangers’ suits came a new look for the villainous alien invader hell bent on world domination Rita Repulsa. Considering the series has always used colors to distinguish the rangers from one another, myself and many began to speculate that Rita’s new green and gold suit could signal that she was harnessing the power of the dragon coin which she had given to Tommy Oliver in the original series, transforming him into the Green ranger to help her take on the Power Rangers.

According to The Wrap, Rita Repulsa is, in fact, harnessing the dragon coin as she is the former Green Ranger gone rogue. In the film, Rita will be attempting to resurrect her lackey Goldar after he was vaporized into microscopic gold particles many centuries ago. It seems the film will be also pulling elements other versions other than Mighty Morphin Power Rangers including Power Rangers Zeo. In this new version, Goldar was created with the purpose of stealing the Zeo crystal, the artifact which the Rangers’ power stems from. The film will inject a ticking clock as the rangers will only have 71 hours to stop her. My bet is on them failing and Rita supersizing Goldar to give the Rangers an opportunity to use the Megazord in battle. Rita will be trying to deliver the Zeo crystal to Mighty Morphin’s other major villain, her master Lord Zedd.

The putty patrol will also be on hand as the report states they will appear in multiple action sequences including a bank heist in Russia.

The film seems to be retooling the origin of Zordon as well. In the original series, Zordon created the Power Morphers after he was trapped him in a time warp. The report also states that in the film, Zordon was the original red Ranger before being trapped in a state of pure energy.

Power Rangers hits theaters on March 24, 2017.

The film stars Dacre Montgomery as Jason Lee Scott (Red Ranger), RJ Cyler as Billy Cranston (Blue Ranger), Naomi Scott as Kimberly Hart (Pink Ranger), Becky G as Trini Kwan (Yellow Ranger), Ludi Lin as Zack Taylor (Black Ranger), Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa, Bill Hader as Alpha 5, and Bryan Cranston as Zordon.

‘Power Rangers’ Alpha 5 Concept Art Revealed

Screen Shot 2016-11-30 at 2.12.50 PM.png

The reboot of the Fox Kids series from the nineties Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is a departure from the original that is going for a much darker, more mature take on the teenagers with attitude. The film has dropped “Mighty Morphin” from the title and swapped out the sunny setting of Angel Grove for the grim atmosphere of Vancouver. So far, this darker reimagining has brought us all new designs for the suits worn by the Rangers and their Megazords as well as a whole new look for Rita Repulsa that seems very green ranger-esque.

Today, IGN has revealed concept art of the new design for Alpha 5, the assistant to the Rangers’ commander, Zordon. The new look for Alpha 5 falls right in line with the alien look of the new Ranger suits.

Alpha will be voiced by Bill Hader, which seems like an all too perfect casting choice. A look at Zordon, who will be played by Bryan Cranston, has yet to be revealed but with the film only five months away it shouldn’t be long now.

Power Rangers hits theaters on March 24, 2017.

New Look At Rita Repulsa in ‘Power Rangers’ Features Redesigned Staff

The feature film reboot for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is just under five months away from its debut. The new film is a major departure from the colorful and campy original Fox Kids series as it features a much darker and mature tone. Not only did Power Rangers drop Mighty Morphin from the title, it has swapped the sunny California setting of Angel Grove for the dreary atmosphere of Vancouver. All of the characters in the reboot have been redesigned from the ground up in appearance while remaining true to the core of the original personalities of their predecessors. Power Rangers features newly designed suits worn by the Rangers as well as Megazords that possess a much more Japanese aesthetic than the suits and Megazords from the nineties.

The nemesis of the Rangers is Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks), an evil witch hell bent on galactic domination. The look for Repulsa has also been redesigned in the upcoming reboot. As I have pointed out on this site before, I find it quite curious that Repulsa sports a green suit in the new film as opposed to her brown robe costume from the original series. Saban has always used the Rangers’ colors to distinguish one Ranger from another and being that in the original series Repulsa was in possession of the Green Ranger’s power coin, it has me wondering if Repulsa is harnessing the power of the coin herself to take on Zordon and his teenagers with attitude.

So far the marketing campaign for Power Rangers has delivered a teaser trailer and images of the newly designed suits for the characters. The designs for the Megazords have been revealed through images from the film’s toyline. But we have yet to see them in their full CG glory.

Today we have a new image that was posted to the film’s Instagram account giving us an official look at the staff wielded by Rita Repulsa. The caption teases that the origin of the character will stay true to the original series which opened with Repulsa making her escape from captivity when two astronauts exploring the moon discovered and removed the lid off of a space dumpster.

Individual Zord Designs for ‘Power Rangers’ Reboot Revealed

The upcoming reboot of Power Rangers features all new looks for the Rangers and Megazords that deviates far away from the colorful look of the original Fox Kids series to give us something darker and a bit more mature. The film still manages to stay true to its core with reimagined, yet familiar versions of the main characters but the visual aesthetics for the Rangers and their Megazord have a much more traditional Japanese influence compared to the original suits and Zords modeled after the dinosaur and prehistoric animal synonymous with each Rangers’ power coin.

Over the last month, several toys have been revealed giving us our first look at Jason’s Tyrannosaurus Zord along with his Power Sword as well as the fully assembled Megazord from the upcoming film. Today the rest of the toy Zords have been revealed showcasing the designs for the Blue Ranger’s Triceratops, The Black Rangers Mastodon, the Yellow Rangers Sabertooth Tiger, and the Pink Rangers Teradactyl. The designs are right in line with everything else we have seen from the film so far. A gray figure can also be seen in the photo for the Teradactyl Zord. Could this be our first look at the new Putty design?

While it doesn’t seem like it will be possible to assemble to the individual Zords together to create the Megazord, a separate Megazord toy which happens to be very large will be hitting shelves this holiday season.

Power Rangers stars Dacre Montgomery as Jason Lee Scott (Red Ranger), RJ Cyler as Billy Cranston (Blue Ranger), Naomi Scott as Kimberly Hart (Pink Ranger), Becky G as Trini Kwan (Yellow Ranger), Ludi Lin as Zack Taylor (Black Ranger), Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa, Bryan Cranston as Zordon, and Bill Hader as Alpha 5.

Along with the new looks for the Rangers and Rita Repulsa, we just got our first look at the newly designed Megazord when it was revealed via the official twitter account for the upcoming film this past Friday.

Considering everything we have seen so far from the film is redesigned from the original series, you can bet that the yet to be revealed characters of Zordon and Alpha will be sporting an updated look as well. But even with the fresh take on the upcoming film, the core of the series still remains in that the characters myself and many grew up loving are still the same teenagers with attitude.

‘Power Rangers’ Megazord Design Revealed

Late Friday night, the official twitter account for the upcoming film revealed the new toy Megazord which gave us our first look at the new faceless design.

In an attempt to separate itself from the original Fox Kids series that began airing in 1993, the upcoming Power Rangers film has deviated far away from the colorful and campy tone of the original series to a bleaker and more serious take on the teenagers with attitude who come together to defend the Earth from evil alien invaders.

The original series which took place in the bright and sunny Angel Grove, California has opted for the rather grim atmosphere that productions filmed in Vancouver and the pacific northwest share. Along with dropping ‘Mighty Morphin’ from the title, the new film features all new updated designs for the Rangers’ suits which have a much more traditional Japanese influence compared to the original suits that featured helmets modeled after the dinosaur and prehistoric animal synonymous with each Rangers’ power coin.

Last week, RangerNation.com revealed the first look at several toys which included the Red Rangers Tyrannosaurus Megazord plus his Power Sword as well as the Rangers’ Morphers and Power Coins which we were treated to a glimpse of in the official teaser trailer that debuted at New York Comic Con.

Late Friday night, the official twitter account for the upcoming film revealed the new toy Megazord which gave us our first look at the new faceless design.

The new Megazord is a major departure from the original Megazord but is right in line aesthetically with the design cues of the new suits for the Rangers. What’s disappointing here is that it doesn’t seem like you will be able to take the Rangers’ individual Zords and put them together to create the Megazord like you could back in the nineties.

It’s also a bit odd that the new Megazord sports a pair of wings. In the original, even though the Pink Ranger had a Pterodactyl power coin, the Megazord did not have wings until the White Ranger joined his Falcon Ninjazord with the Ninja Megazord in the first Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie .

legacy megazord box comparison.jpg

As someone who grew up with the original series as a kid, I am very excited for the new modern take on the Rangers. While I don’t love the new designs for the suits or this new Megazord, I do appreciate how much the production has done to separate itself from the original series for a new audience so I’ll wait to judge the suits and Megazords until I see them in action.

Power Rangers stars Dacre Montgomery as Jason Lee Scott (Red Ranger), RJ Cyler as Billy Cranston (Blue Ranger), Naomi Scott as Kimberly Hart (Pink Ranger), Becky G as Trini Kwan (Yellow Ranger), Ludi Lin as Zack Taylor (Black Ranger), Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa, Bryan Cranston as Zordon, and Bill Hader as Alpha 5.

New Look at Rita Repulsa in ‘Power Rangers’

Thanks to the latest issue of The Roar, the student newspaper for Angel Grove High, we have a new look at Elizabeth Banks in the villainous role of Rita Repulsa.

Thanks to the latest issue of The Roar, the student newspaper for Angel Grove High, we have a new look at Elizabeth Banks in the villainous role of Rita Repulsa.

While much of the new film seems to be in line with the original Fox Kids series from the nineties, the new costume design worn by Banks is a major departure from the original look of Repulsa.

Screen_Shot_2016-10-31_at_3.26.14_PM (1).png

The new green costume has me doubting that we will eventually see a Green Ranger in a potential sequel to the upcoming film. In the original series, Rita Repulsa used her powers to enchant Angel Grove High student Tommy Oliver, giving him the dragon power coin in order for him to transform into the Green Power Ranger so he could defeat the Power Rangers which stood in the way of Repulsa conquering Earth. Being that colors have always been used to distinguish the Rangers from one another and within the series, I don’t think Saban will want to mix the colors between the heroes and the villains.

Another possibility is that Repulsa is harnessing the power of the dragon power coin giving her the new green look as opposed to her brown robe costume from the original series.

The Roar also confirms that Billy is very much like his nineties counterpart as a highly intelligent student who will bring the brains to the new team of Rangers in the upcoming film.

Some light has also been shed on just exactly what Jason Scott did to get himself in trouble as we saw in the beginning of the teaser trailer. Turns out it was a prank gone wrong, resulting in Jason totaling his red truck we saw.
